New Concept Aims to Close Contested Aerial Logistics Gap
At the Air & Space Forces Association conference, Textron Aviation and Merlin unveiled the SkyCourier UX concept, an autonomous unmanned transport aircraft aimed at closing the contested aerial logistics gap. The platform is a modified version of the Cessna SkyCourier aircraft, with a payload capacity of up to 6,000 pounds and a range of up to 900 nautical miles. Additionally, Swarm Aero introduced its Gamera Unmanned Aerial System, a Group 5 UAS with a full-sized mockup and claimed capabilities of a mission radius of 2,500 nautical miles and a max range of 9,000 nautical miles. According to Defense Security Monitor, a Forecast International blog, these developments reflect emerging trends in UAS procurement, including rapid acquisition, distributed capabilities, and cheap hardware paired with sophisticated software.
