Damascus Aims for Sovereignty Over All Bases and Territory
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has announced plans to end foreign military presence in the country, aiming for complete sovereignty over all bases. Prior to al-Sharaa’s presidency, Russia operated from dozens of military bases in Syria, but this number has significantly decreased. The remaining Russian bases are being converted into joint training and qualification centers, following a memorandum of understanding between Syria and Russia. Syria is also seeking to establish legal status for Turkish military bases in the country. According to Breaking Defense, this move reflects Syria’s desire to assert its independence and reduce its reliance on foreign military powers.
