Beijing Exploits Ambiguity To Undermine Regional Stability
The concept of ‘status quo’ in the context of the Taiwan Strait is a myth that China exploits to undermine regional stability. The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act does not mention this concept, instead establishing explicit US obligations to provide defensive weapons and maintain the capacity to resist any force or coercion that threatens regional peace or Taiwan’s security. Beijing has systematically altered reality through near-daily air and naval incursions, eroding maritime boundaries, and utilizing lawfare to criminalize Taiwanese sovereignty.
