New Deals Expand Commercial Radar Capabilities for Intelligence
The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has announced new contracts with three synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite operators - Capella Space, ICEYE US, and Umbra - to provide operational data for integration with its own classified intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems. The contracts, which run from August 1, 2026, to July 31, 2027, with optional extensions, represent a significant step in the NRO’s efforts to leverage commercial space sector innovation. The new contracts feature defined performance thresholds and continuous improvement goals, differing from previous demonstration and study contracts. According to the NRO, this approach will enable a rapid transition of the companies’ current study contracts into new Radar Commercial Augmentation contract vehicles, as reported by Breaking Defense.
