Iran has appointed Mohsen Rezaei, a longtime military commander, as the new secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, replacing Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr. The appointment, announced by a spokesman for Iran’s president, may represent a further consolidation of power by the country’s old guard security establishment. Rezaei, who led Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps during the Iran-Iraq War, had been serving as an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
