Copilot Warned Of Low And Slow Approach Before Incident
A United Airlines Boeing 767 struck a light pole on approach to Newark Liberty International Airport, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The incident occurred on May 3, 2026, as the aircraft was arriving from Venice Marco Polo Airport in Italy. The copilot had warned the captain that the aircraft was low and slow moments before the strike, which resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft and minor injuries to the driver of a tractor-trailer hit by debris. The NTSB is reviewing data from the cockpit voice recorder, flight data recorder, and other sources as part of its investigation, which was first reported by AeroTime.
