Regulatory Pressures And Costs Impact Airline Route Development
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has warned that European air connectivity growth effectively stalled in 2025, with the total number of airline routes connecting Europe growing by only 1%. This slow growth reflects a difficult operating environment for airlines, including rising costs, regulatory burdens, and broader economic challenges. IATA reported that 1,127 routes were cancelled, while 1,281 routes were launched or restored, resulting in a net increase of only 154 routes. The association is calling for urgent aviation policy reforms to address these challenges, as reported by International Airport Review.
