AUKUS Spending Ramps Up In Latest Fiscal Plan
Australia has released its defense budget for fiscal 2026-2027, allocating $45.2 billion USD for defense spending. The budget includes a significant increase in funding for the Australian Submarine Agency, which is overseeing the development of a nuclear submarine capability under the AUKUS pact. The agency’s budget will increase by 33% to 512.5 million AUD, and staffing levels are expected to rise to 1,209. The plan to introduce nuclear-powered submarines is expected to be the costliest defense program in Australian history, with forecasts suggesting a spend of between $71 billion AUD and $96 billion AUD by 2036.
