Safety Precautions Prompt Operational Pause For Aging Trainer Jets
The US Air Force has grounded its entire fleet of T-38 Talon trainer jets following a crash in Mississippi on May 12, in which two pilots safely ejected. The grounding, described as an operational pause, is intended to allow for a thorough investigation into the incident and to ensure the safety of aircrews. The T-38, which has been in service since 1961, is a critical component of Air Force pilot training, but its age has made maintenance increasingly challenging. The Air Force plans to replace the T-38 with the new T-7 Red Hawk, built by Boeing, which is expected to be ready for pilot training in 2028. This development was first reported by Breaking Defense.
