Engine Makers Advance Designs For Future Unmanned Platforms
The US Air Force has awarded contracts to GE Aerospace and Rolls-Royce to develop engine designs for future drones and potentially other aircraft. The two companies will advance their designs for the Air Force’s Medium Thrust Class Autonomous Collaborative Platforms. GE’s contract is for its GE426 powerplant, while Rolls-Royce’s award involves its AE engine family. The Air Force spokesperson noted that drones are an initial focus, but other platforms with similar propulsion characteristics may also benefit from these engines. The awards were reported by Breaking Defense.
