Small German Airport Competes Against Huge Hubs With Unique Advantages
Nuremberg Airport has made a remarkable recovery after losing its main hub carrier Air Berlin in 2017. The airport has diversified its operations, attracting new airlines and routes, and has become a leader in medical air services. With its unique advantages, including 24/7 operations and a central location, Nuremberg Airport is competing against larger hubs like Munich and Frankfurt. According to Managing Director Michael Hupe, the airport’s strategy is based on the ‘Blue Ocean’ concept, focusing on point-to-point services and avoiding direct competition with larger carriers. This approach has allowed the airport to register its highest-ever turnout in 2025, with 20 operators carrying four-and-a-half million passengers to and from 60 destinations. As reported by AeroTime.
