Ground Handling Innovation Amid Labor Shortage
Japan Airlines is introducing humanoid robots to assist with ground handling tasks at Japanese airports, starting in May 2026. The experiment, a collaboration with GMO AI & Robotics Trading, aims to reduce the workload of human staff and create a more sustainable operation. The use of humanoid robots is seen as a potential solution to the limitations of traditional automation systems, which have struggled to adapt to the complex nature of ground handling work. The project was first reported by AeroTime.
