New Study Explores Feasibility Of Space-Based Metal Supply Chain
A new study from researchers at EPFL in Switzerland has explored the feasibility of mining asteroids to provide metals for a Mars colony. The study found that specific asteroids, known as M-type asteroids, contain valuable materials such as iron and nickel, and that these materials could be extracted and delivered to Mars efficiently. The researchers also identified the potential for asteroid-based propellant manufacturing, which could eliminate the need for return fuel from Earth. According to the study, published in the journal Asteroid Mining to Sustain a Mars Colony, this approach could provide a viable solution for sustaining a human settlement on Mars. The study was first reported by Universe Today.
