Ecommerce Giant Expands Satellite Ambitions With Strategic Acquisition
Amazon is set to acquire Globalstar, a satellite operator, for approximately $11.57 billion, expanding its presence in the satellite-based mobile internet market. The deal provides Amazon with an existing fleet, ground infrastructure, and globally authorized spectrum licenses, which will operate alongside its own network. Amazon plans to use the acquisition to support its direct-to-device satellite system, with deployment targeted to begin in 2028. The company has also reached an agreement with Apple to provide satellite connectivity for iPhone and Apple Watch features. The acquisition was first reported by AeroTime.
