Russia-Iran Drone Deal Raises Concerns About Lethal Support
Russia is reportedly completing shipments of modified Shahed-type drones to Iran, according to Western intelligence cited by the Financial Times. The drones, which are part of a package including food and medicine, are believed to be upgraded versions of the Shahed-136 drone. The move has raised concerns about Russia’s willingness to provide direct lethal support to Iran, potentially escalating tensions in the region. The Kremlin has denied the report, dismissing it as ‘a lot of lies’. The Financial Times reported that Western officials have confirmed Moscow’s agreement to provide Verba man-portable air-defense systems and missiles to Iran, but rejected Iranian requests for the more capable S-400 system due to escalation concerns.
