US Commander Predicts European Military Spending Surge
The commander of US European Command, Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee that Europe should be able to take the lead role in defending itself by 2035. This comes as several European nations have met or are near the NATO target of spending 5% of their GDP on defense. The general noted that the indigenous industrial base will need time to catch up, but progress is expected by the end of the decade. The US military’s force posture in Europe has changed little, with only one brigade combat team withdrawn last year. This development was reported by Breaking Defense.
