India Eyes Sixth-Generation Fighter Amid Modernization Efforts
India has expressed interest in joining one of the two European sixth-generation fighter programs, citing a need to enhance its air domain capabilities. The country’s Ministry of Defence plans to consider joining one of the consortia and begin considering a sixth-generation fighter right away. India’s air combat capabilities have been a concern due to development and maturity issues with its indigenous Tejas program, and the country is also planning to develop a fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. The Indian government’s plans for a fifth-generation fighter program are still in the early stages, and it is unclear whether existing partners in the European consortia will allow India to join the development program. The Indian government submitted a document to the parliament’s Standing Committee on Defence, citing a need to ensure that India does not lag behind in achieving the target for advanced aircraft. This development may indicate India’s desire to enhance its air domain capabilities and keep pace with modern warfare.
