GAO Report Highlights Challenges in Nuclear Security Enterprise
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a report on the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) major construction projects, which have seen cost overruns more than double since 2023. The report highlights challenges in project management and oversight, with delays growing from 9 years to 30 years as of June 2025. The NNSA is currently managing 28 major construction projects, with a total estimated cost of at least $30 billion. The GAO has made recommendations to improve performance, but their implementation is uncertain.
