Pentagon Accelerator Targets Lower Cost Space Domain Awareness
The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is seeking commercially produced satellites to support the Geosynchronous High-Resolution Optical Space-Based Tactical Reconnaissance (GHOST-R) program, aiming to rapidly deploy a capability to monitor satellites in geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO). The program seeks to reduce costs compared to existing space domain awareness programs, such as the Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP), while achieving high-resolution image collection and detailed characterization of resident space objects. Bidders must provide a minimal viable product within 24 months, with the goal of transitioning to a government-owned and operated system within 36 months. The solicitation was published by the Pentagon’s in-house accelerator, as reported by Breaking Defense.
