US Coast Guard Partners with Finnish Shipyard to Build Icebreakers Amid Growing Arctic Presence

The US Coast Guard has awarded Davie Defense a contract for five Arctic Security Cutters, with construction split between Texas and Helsinki Shipyard in Finland. The agreement follows two previous contract awards and is part of an October Memorandum of Understanding between the White House and Finland. According to Breaking Defense, Davie Defense CEO Kai Skvarla said the company aims to deliver mission-ready cutters on-time and on-budget. The first icebreakers are set to be delivered in 2028, with a focus on revitalizing the US Coast Guard’s icebreaking capabilities.
