Pentagon Seeks Jam-Proof Navigation Tech

Magnetic Navigation Systems To Counter GPS Jamming

The Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is launching a program to develop magnetic navigation systems that can provide resilient and unjammable navigation, particularly over oceans. The technology uses magnetometers to detect changes in the Earth’s magnetic field and is considered a passive technology that does not broadcast radio frequency signals. The DIU is seeking industry prototypes for magnetic data collection platforms that can address warfighter needs for precision navigation capabilities beyond GPS. The program, called Geomagnetic Airborne Unmanned Survey System (GAUSS), is a multi-year initiative designed to demonstrate mature technology for magnetic mapping. This development was first reported by Breaking Defense.
