Berlin Expands Maritime Surveillance Capabilities With New Drone Fleet

Germany has announced the purchase of eight General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones, with deliveries scheduled to start in 2028. The drones will be used to enhance maritime surveillance and protect sea lanes, and will be operated by Naval Air Wing 3 at Nordholz naval station. The procurement is being made through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, and includes four Certifiable Ground Control Stations. The German Armed Forces stated that the new fleet will draw on the experience of allied armed forces to ensure a smooth start to flight operations.
