Virgin Australia Launches Daily Melbourne to Doha Service

Virgin Australia Expands International Network with New Route

Virgin Australia has launched its first daily Melbourne Airport (MEL) to Doha Hammad International Airport (DOH) service, as part of its expansion of its international network ahead of the busy Christmas travel period. The airline is using Qatar Airways’ Boeing 777 aircraft on the route, which provides significant freight space in addition to passenger capacity. According to Virgin Australia, the expanded network is expected to inject more than AU$3 billion (US$1.9 billion) into the Australian economy annually. Research commissioned by Melbourne Airport indicates the Melbourne-Doha service alone will contribute approximately AU$190 million (US$124 million) in economic value to Victoria each year. This is the first daily service between Australia and Qatar’s capital, and it brings the total number of daily services between the two countries to four, with Virgin Australia and partner Qatar Airways operating flights from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth. The airline expects one of its busiest summer periods on record as it prepares to fly millions of passengers during the Christmas travel season. The partnership delivers benefits well beyond passenger travel, with additional cargo capacity between Melbourne and Doha expected to strengthen Australian exporters’ ability to reach global markets quickly and reliably. The Melbourne-Doha launch follows Virgin Australia’s return to long-haul international flying in June 2025. The airline’s Chief Executive Officer Dave Emerson said the new service is a major milestone for Virgin Australia and for the millions of Australians who want more choice and value when traveling internationally. The airline’s Chief Executive Officer Lorie Argus highlighted the economic benefits of the service, stating that Melbourne Airport handles more than 40 per cent of the nation’s airfreight exports and that the additional services will unlock more capacity for local exporters to reach more markets across the globe. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer also emphasized the partnership’s broader impact, stating that it delivers benefits well beyond passenger travel.
