Nuclear Modernization Efforts Gain Momentum
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has completed production on the W88 Alt 370, an upgraded version of the legacy W88 used on Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines. The program, which began in 2013, was completed in just four years and cost an estimated $3.4 billion. The successful completion of this program is a significant milestone in the US military’s nuclear modernization efforts, which also include the B61-12 gravity bomb and the SLCM-N sea-launched cruise missile. The staff working on the Alt 370 effort will now focus on accelerating the SLCM-N program, according to NNSA Acting Deputy Administrator David Hoagland. The completion of the W88 Alt 370 testifies to the successful collaboration between the NNSA, the US Navy, and the Department of War. This achievement may signal a continued commitment to nuclear modernization, which could have far-reaching implications for national security and global deterrence.
