US Admits Role in Deadly Black Hawk-American Eagle Crash

Washington D.C. Helicopter and Jet Collision Claims 67 Lives, Government Takes Responsibility

The US government has acknowledged its role in the January 2025 collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Eagle jet over the Potomac River in Washington D.C. The accident resulted in the deaths of 67 people, with court documents filed on December 17, 2025, accepting the government’s responsibility for the breach of duty of care. The FAA previously reported 85 incidents between October 2021 and December 2024 involving planes and helicopters coming close to each other in Washington airspace. Other contributing factors include the Black Hawk flying at a higher altitude than permitted and the use of visual separation. AeroTime reports that Attorney Robert A. Clifford stated: ‘The United States admits the Army’s responsibility for the needless loss of life in the crash…’.
