Saab to Launch AI-Assisted After-Action Review Platform for Warfighters
Saab Announces AI-Powered After-Action Review Platform for Military Training
Defense technology company Saab is preparing to launch AR3, an innovative after-action review platform that harnesses artificial intelligence to provide warfighters with objective performance feedback during training exercises. The company unveiled the initiative at the I/ITSEC 2025 conference in Orlando, with plans for a minimum viable product release in the second quarter of 2026.
The AR3 platform operates similarly to film review in professional sports, allowing military personnel to analyze their performance during simulated combat scenarios. However, Saab’s approach introduces a significant technological advantage: AI-powered analysis that processes vast quantities of training data in real time.
“It’s all about training and it’s all about people to get that confidence into the whole fight,” said Joakim Alhbin, Saab’s vice president of training and simulation. The platform generates AI-driven responses functioning as an intelligent chatbot, interpreting performance data collected through Saab’s exercise control (EXCON) software suite, which captures information from sensors, GPS devices, and platforms including drones and ground vehicles.
Users can query the system with questions like “How did platoon X perform?” and receive detailed AI-generated analysis identifying successful tactics and areas requiring improvement based on pre-loaded training objectives. This capability addresses a critical challenge in large-scale military exercises: human analysts cannot efficiently process data from thousands of soldiers across complex training environments.
James McArthur, director of training and simulation within Saab’s land system division, emphasized the limitations of traditional analysis. “If I try to do it, even if I have like 10 of my best friends doing it, we’re going to miss things that we don’t even know we missed,” he explained. The AI system eliminates such gaps by comprehensively analyzing all available data without human oversight bias.
Ed Jezisek, principal program manager of training and simulation for land systems, described the platform’s analytical rigor as providing “God’s truth”—objective data derived from precise GPS positioning and sensor information that transcends subjective interpretation. This removes traditional biases where dominant personalities might claim victory based on perception rather than measurable outcomes.
Saab has invested years developing after-action review capabilities, but integrating AI represents a crucial evolution. The volume and complexity of modern training data demands automated analysis to generate actionable insights quickly, enabling warfighters to learn and adapt during intensive training cycles.
Following the MVP launch, Saab intends to commercialize AR3 through its existing EXCON customer base, which includes military organizations in the United Kingdom, Poland, Denmark, and additional allied nations. The platform represents a significant advancement in military training technology, combining data analytics with artificial intelligence to enhance warfighter readiness and performance evaluation.
