Navy Seeks New Frigate Design for 2028 Launch

Aggressive Schedule for Next-Generation Frigates in the Works

The US Navy aims to have new frigates based on an American design in the water by 2028, according to Jason Potter, the Navy’s acting acquisition executive. The service plans to use a design approach that separates finalizing the ship’s design from construction. Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s contract for four of six frigates was terminated, and the Navy will pursue a new class of vessels. According to Breaking Defense, the Navy Secretary John Phelan recently stated that any change orders would have to go through him. HII has been building a National Security Cutter for the US Coast Guard, which may be modified for the new frigate program.
