Navy Accelerates Frigate Program Following Constellation-Class Cancellation
The US Navy plans to have new frigates based on an American design in 2028, according to a senior service official. The decision follows the cancellation of the Constellation-class frigate program. The Navy will provide Fincantieri with piecemeal work from other programs to keep the shipyard afloat. The service is pursuing a new class of vessels and is in close communication with the US Coast Guard about shipbuilding. The Navy Secretary, John Phelan, has stated that the new frigate will be a modified National Security Cutter. Fincantieri Marinette Marine was previously contracted to build four of six frigates under the Constellation-class program. The Navy has taken criticism for making excessive design changes to the Constellation-class frigate, which led to schedule problems and cost overruns. Breaking Defense.
