Navy Pursues Next-Generation Frigates with Proven American Built Ship

The US Navy has announced plans to pursue a new frigate class based on HII’s Legend-class national security cutter. The goal is to have the new ship in the water by 2028. According to Breaking Defense, Navy Secretary John Phelan directed the acquisition of the new frigate class, citing the proven American built ship’s ability to protect US interests at home and abroad. HII will be the program’s lead yard, but other yards will compete for construction. The Navy aims to shift its fleet balance with more small surface combatants and unmanned vessels.
