France Confirms India's Rafale F5 Plans Amid Strategic Tensions
The French Ministry of the Armed Forces has publicly acknowledged India’s plan to acquire 90 Rafale F4 fighter jets, with an option for 24 Rafale F5s. The planned acquisition is seen as a response to China and Pakistan’s disinformation campaign following the loss of an Indian Air Force Rafale during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. The Rafale F5 variant features upgraded engine and sensor upgrades, and its integration with a stealth unmanned combat air system could signal a shift towards more advanced air-combat technologies. The deal is expected to be signed in 2026, pending India’s formal procurement process. The French Ministry of the Armed Forces made the announcement in a ministry analysis, which was later removed from public access. The development is significant for France, which may strengthen its position in the global fighter market and deepen its industrial cooperation with India.
