UK Ministry of Defence Responds to Russian Vessel's Alleged Laser Attack on RAF Pilots

The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed a laser incident involving a Russian intelligence-gathering vessel, the Yantar, which allegedly directed light lasers at Royal Air Force pilots during surveillance operations off the coast of Scotland. The Royal Navy deployed the Type 23 frigate HMS Somerset, while the RAF sent Poseidon P-8 maritime patrol aircraft to shadow the ship. The incident is being taken extremely seriously by the UK government, with Defence Secretary John Healey calling it a ‘deeply dangerous’ action. The UK has been monitoring the Yantar’s movements since January 2025, and the incident is part of a wider pattern of Russian naval and airborne behavior globally since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
