A Proposal to Realign America's Nuclear Triad with the Modern Military

In his first message to airmen, new Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach stated that the Air Force should focus on restoring and expanding US airpower. However, the service’s ICBM force has been in disrepair for decades and is at risk of undermining the credibility of America’s nuclear deterrent. The Army, with its existing land-based missile capabilities, may be better suited to handle this mission. A transfer could relieve the Air Force of an unsustainable modernization burden and reinforce the Army’s growing emphasis on long-range fires.
