Israeli Firm Expands Air Defense Capabilities with New US Facility
Rafael, a leading Israeli defense firm, has officially opened a new factory in Camden, Arkansas, to produce Iron Dome interceptors for Israel and future foreign customers. The facility is part of a $8.7 billion aid package passed by the US Congress in April 2024, which includes $5.2 billion for air defense assets. The signing of the contract represents a strategic leap forward for Israel’s air defense capabilities, and the joint production of Tamir interceptors with Raytheon marks a significant expansion of the US-Israel defense partnership. The facility was built with production for Israel or future foreign customers in mind, and will provide a robust American production base for the Tamir and SkyHunter interceptors. The investment was announced hours after Israel’s Ministry of Defense announced a multi-billion dollar contract with Rafael for new munitions. The ceremony was attended by US Defense Attaché Maj. Gen. Aaron Drake and key Israeli defense officials, including Director General Maj. Gen. Amir Baram. The Iron Dome air defense system is a key component of Israel’s multi-layered air defense systems, and has been upgraded to deal with emerging threats such as short and medium range rockets and drones.
