Autonomous Aviation Pioneer Expands Technology Roadmap with Hybrid Concept
Joby Aviation has completed the first flight of a turbine-electric autonomous demonstrator aircraft, marking a significant expansion of its technology roadmap. The aircraft, which integrates a hybrid turbine powertrain into its existing electric VTOL platform, is equipped with SuperPilot autonomous flight technology. Joby has partnered with L3Harris to develop the hybrid platform, which is positioned for longer-range air-taxi operations and potential sales to defense customers. The company has also announced a major international commercial commitment, including a letter of intent with Kazakhstan’s Alatau Advance Air Group. The US government has identified hybrid and autonomous platforms as a priority, requesting over $9 billion for next-generation aircraft in its 2026 budget. Joby’s founder and CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, said the company’s ability to work at a pace unusual in the defense and aerospace sector will help deliver on its goal of fielding hybrid and autonomous systems. The company will continue ground and flight testing before operational demonstrations with US government customers in 2026.
