German Defense Contractor Integrates AI into Front-Line Combat Aircraft
Munich-based defense software company Helsing has been selected to support Germany’s Eurofighter EK program with an artificial-intelligence-enabled electronic warfare suite. The EK configuration, which converts 15 German Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets into a dedicated electronic attack and reconnaissance variant, will integrate Helsing’s Cirra AI-based processing software with Saab’s Arexis system. The program aims to replace Germany’s retiring Tornado ECR fleet and is expected to be completed by 2028, with operational capability targeted in the early 2030s. The contract was announced by Saab and Airbus Defence and Space, with a value of approximately 549 million euros. The integration of AI into the Eurofighter program marks one of the most significant attempts yet to integrate advanced AI into a front-line European combat aircraft.
