Air Force Chief of Staff Proposes Structural Reorganization of Nuclear Triad
In his first message to airmen, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach suggested reassigning the ICBM mission to the Army, citing the Air Force’s mismatch with the mission and the Army’s better equipped capabilities. The proposal aims to relieve the Air Force of an unsustainable modernization burden and reinforce the Army’s growing emphasis on long-range fires. The transfer is expected to be conducted with attention to nuclear safety and assurance.
