Firefly Aerospace Awarded Contract for Responsive On-Orbit Mission

Firefly to Utilize Elytra Vehicle for US DoD's Sinequone Project

Firefly Aerospace has been awarded a contract by the US Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) for a responsive on-orbit mission utilizing its Elytra vehicle. The mission, set to launch as early as 2027, will perform on-demand orbital maneuvers and space domain awareness operations in low Earth orbit (LEO). Firefly’s Elytra Dawn configuration will utilize common components from the company’s launch vehicles and lunar landers to enable on-demand mobility and maneuvers. The award follows initial trade studies completed by Firefly in 2024 and is part of the DIU’s Sinequone project aiming to deliver cost-effective, responsive access beyond Geosynchronous orbits.
