Pilatus and Lockheed Martin Collaborate on Next-Generation Pilot Training
Pilatus and Lockheed Martin are partnering on an offset project to develop an advanced next-generation pilot training system for the F-35A. The system will be tailored for F-35 nations and will utilize the PC-21 turboprop trainer. The partnership aims to provide a cost-effective and efficient training solution for military pilots. This project is part of a larger offset agreement between Lockheed Martin and the Swiss government, which includes a commitment to implement projects worth 60% of the contract value. The partnership was announced by Markus Bucher, CEO of Pilatus, and J.R. McDonald, Vice President of F-35 Business Development at Lockheed Martin. The Federal Office for Defence Procurement (armasuisse) has pre-approved the offset project, and the agreements between Lockheed Martin and Pilatus were concluded in the summer of 2024. The PC-21 is a highly efficient training system designed to meet the demanding training requirements of the future. It offers advanced training covering a wide range of mission types previously reserved exclusively for jet trainers. The system’s innovative design ensures a realistic frontline cockpit environment, enabling student pilots to make an efficient transition to the frontline aircraft. The partnership between Pilatus and Lockheed Martin is a win-win situation for all three parties, promoting sustainable innovation, technological development, and the competitiveness of Swiss industry.
