Regional Defense Outlays Surge Amid US Security Commitment Concerns
Military spending in the Asia-Pacific region increased at the fastest pace in 16 years in 2025, driven by concerns among US allies about the reliability of Washington’s security commitments. Total global military spending reached $2.89 trillion, with the top three spenders - the US, China, and Russia - accounting for over half of the total. The global military burden has risen to 2.5% of GDP, the highest since 2009, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
