Poland Eyes Airbus A330 MRTT Tankers with EU SAFE Funding Support

Poland has authorized its defense ministry to seek EU SAFE financing for a dedicated aerial refueling capability, with plans to acquire two to four Airbus A330 MRTT tanker aircraft. The move addresses a critical NATO capability gap as Poland expands its F-35A fighter fleet and faces sustained operational pressure along the alliance’s eastern flank. SAFE’s EU-origin requirement effectively limits Poland’s choice to the A330 MRTT, with procurement costs estimated up to €1 billion and a timeline aligned with Airbus’s production schedule through 2030.
