China's AEP20 Turboprop: A Low-Cost Alternative to Piston Engines?
China’s Aero Engine Corporation (AECC) is developing the AEP20, a small turboprop engine designed to compete with piston engines in light aircraft and drone markets. Producing 320 shaft horsepower, the engine weighs one-third less than comparable piston engines and is engineered to last twice as long. Priced at approximately $170,000, the AEP20 aims to deliver turboprop performance and reliability while maintaining operating costs competitive with traditional piston engines. First flight testing is scheduled for late 2026, with strong early interest from Chinese manufacturers including a major intent order from drone maker Yitong UAV System.
